Deodorant versus antiperspirant
A deodorant masks or neutralizes body odors under the arms. Deodorants are often perfumed and provide long-lasting freshness and a unique scent. It does not reduce sweating. So after a day of hard work, you still have dripping armpits. An antiperspirant goes a step further by controlling sweating. An antiperspirant often contains aluminum salts and very effectively blocks sweating. These salts reduce your body's natural sweat function by blocking the sweat ducts in your skin. This makes it harder for moisture to reach the skin surface.
Which deodorant should you choose?
The choice between a deodorant and an antiperspirant depends on:
- whether you naturally sweat quickly;
- whether you do heavy physical work daily or exercise a lot;
- and to what extent you do or do not have sensitive skin to certain ingredients.
If you sweat quickly and still have a whole day of work ahead, you can choose an antiperspirant. If you exercise, you know you'll sweat for a while. After exercising, you often shower anyway. In that case, a deodorant is effective. If you have sensitive skin, the aluminum salts in antiperspirant deodorants may cause skin irritation. Then it's best to use a deodorant with natural ingredients without these salts. Some underarm products contain alcohol. If you regularly shave your underarms, you should avoid deodorants with alcohol. Alcohol can dry out the skin and possibly irritate it, causing red spots and a burning sensation.
Deodorants come in different forms and compositions: spray, stick, or roller, and with or without aluminum salts and alcohol. Many deodorants from men's brands match well in scent with shaving soaps, aftershave products, and colognes. The choice is, of course, personal.
